Bryansk is one of the most highly developed industrial capacities. The leading position in the productive structure belongs to enterprises of machine-building and metalworking, electronics, lumbering and woodworking, pulp-and-paper, textile and construction materials industries.
Bryansk has significant reserves of peat, raw materials (such as sand, clay, rotten-stone, chalk) for construction materials and glass-making industries, as well as phosphate-containing ores for the production of mineral fertilizers.
A considerable portion of the country (about one fourth) is covered by forests.
